Meet the team: Volunteer Paige

Hi Paige! So tell us, what made you decide to volunteer at Camrose and how did you hear about us?

I’ve wanted to volunteer to help homeless and vulnerable people for a while now and decided to bite the bullet. I think it’s really important to give back to the community and be there to help those who need it. Camrose was the top of my Google search and I’m so glad you were.

Can you tell us a bit about your day job?

I’m a software tester, which basically means I check the work of software developers and point out their mistakes all day (they love me!)

What roles have you undertaken at Camrose?

Usually I can be found making teas and coffees to help warm everyone up. I also help to grab anything our clients need from our storage, serve dinners, clean up afterwards and lend an understanding ear when clients need someone to talk to.

What has been the most enjoyable part of your volunteering experience so far? Have there been any challenges?

Building friendships with clients and other volunteers. Everyone has such a unique perspective and I’ve learned so much from getting to know their stories. Sometimes when you hear some of the things our clients have been through, it’s hard to know what to say to help, but I’m learning that often it’s enough just to feel listened to.

Have you picked up any new skills?

I’ve gotten much better at making tea and coffee since volunteering at Camrose! Volunteering has really helped me to get out of my comfort zone and try a bunch of new things, I even cooked on one of the sessions!

If you had to sum up Camrose in three words what would you say?

Compassionate, giving, vital.

Camrose team, Paige
