Volunteer Q&A: Sunday volunteer Chris Powell

We chat to Chris Powell who volunteers at the Camrose Centre on Sundays

Hi Chris so what’s your day job?

I work in IT for a local life insurance brokerage firm.

What made you decide to volunteer at the Camrose Centre?

I have always enjoyed helping those who have been less fortunate in life, and this is a perfect opportunity to do that for a small local charity that had been set up to help the most needed in the community. In the past I have done volunteering for a job centre in Wales where I helped people apply for work. This was a very rewarding role.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Camrose and what challenges are there?

I have found the clients to be the most enjoyable part. I have found it great building up relationships with the clients who I would never have meet in my day to day life and has been great getting to know them.

I cook regularly and sometimes knowing how many to cater for can be a challenge. We have been getting more clients come registration Sunday though; today we catered for 19!

What would you say to anyone thinking about volunteering with us?

Just do it, it is a lot more rewarding than you would first think. The people are great and the centre is extremely well run but they always need more people to help.

If you had to describe Camrose in three words what would they be?

Always there to listen (ok, 4 then!)
